Television & Broadcast

design for user experience

A great user experience has become essential for winning and retaining customers in the highly competitive television and broadcasting business.

Physical controls and on-screen navigation must work seamlessly together, to enable users of all ages and technical ability, to easily navigate and select programs from a vast choice of media content.

The dedicated remote control and set top box provides an important physical symbol of the broadcast brand, that is used daily by millions of families in their homes.

We have designed remote controls and set top boxes for Sky, BT Vision and Kabel Deutschland, while working with leading hardware manufacturers and suppliers to manufacture the designs.

2009

KD Remote Control & STB

2009

Kabel Deutschland is the largest German cable TV company with a broad installed subscriber base of individual households and landlords. KD required a new product design identity for the launch of its VOD Video on Demand service, that integrated the remote controls and set top box.

The product identity needed to be contemporary, but with a retro technical feel, achieved through the use of colour, finish and design detail. We worked closely with Sagem and other OEM manufacturers to refine the designs for production.

2007

Set Top Box Design

2007

The set top box has become an essential technology for receiving advanced High Definition TV and broadcast services, such as DVR Digital Video Recording and VOD Video on demand as shown in this futures design concept.

Together with the design of custom remote controls, we have developed set top box designs for British Telecom, Kabel Deutchland, Sky and ADB Global, incorporating Philips, Sagem, ADB and Humax technologies.

2006

Philips Remote Controls

2006

We have worked on the design of custom remote controls with Philips RCS, now Omni Remotes, who are a leading developer and supplier of control devices to pay TV and consumer electronics companies, that meet specific user interface, styling and branding requirements.

Our designs include standard and PVR controls for Kabel Deutschland, that are differentiated by material and finishes, but using common tooling to reduce costs and a distinctive hard edge remote control design for the Sogecable Digital+ service in Portugal.

2006

BT Vision Remote Control

2006

British Telecom’s BT Vision project brought together a multidisciplinary creative and technical team to design and develop the complete product service and experience, from brand identity, business proposition, on-screen graphics, to industrial design and manufacturing technology.

The project objective for the BT Vision IPTV Broadband and VOD services was to develop a seamless interaction between the physical remote control and the graphic user interface based on extensive design, prototyping and user research

2005

Sky Gnome Radio

2005

The Sky Gnome Radio provided access to high-quality stereo audio, streamed through the Sky set top box. Users could listen to a wide selection of radio channels and the digital television sound signal from anywhere in the home or garden.

The Gnome design is compact and portable with a distinctive friendly style, which was made available in a range of colours. The three sided pyramid form houses a pair of stereo loudspeakers, batteries and electronics with the control panel and LCD display.

2002

Sky Gamepad

2002

The Sky Gamepad control launched for Christmas 2002 enabled up to four players to compete head-to-head with classic games, such as Asteroids, Space Invaders, Pong, Pinball and Boggle, using the Sky Gamestar service with a Sky set top box.

The Gamepad was designed to have a broad family appeal across all ages with a design that was ergonomic and easy to use, while still needing to look technically advanced and cool for the dedicated gamers in the family.

2001

UEbv Max Remote Control

2001

Universal Electronics bv market and manufacture one-for-all TV remote controls and OEM designs for satellite and terrestrial broadcasters, who require customised remote controls to suit their market, language, user interface and branding.

The Max remote control is a versatile and stylish design solution for OEM customers with three separate front mouldings, that enable different key layouts, colours and finishes to be supplied in economic lower volumes and in a faster timescale, than a full custom tooled design.

1998

Sky Remote Controls

1998

The Sky Remote controls used daily by millions of viewers, have become closely linked with the brand identity, since the launch of the Sky Digital service in 1998. The original Sky remote control was the result of extensive design research into user preferences, which defined the ergonomics, distinctive control shape and three zone keypad layout.

The family of Sky controls has been developed from the original DNA with the introduction of the Sky+ PVR remote in 2001 with Personal Video Recorder capability and the Sky+ HD control in 2006, which has advanced the development of the physical brand style identity, while providing consistent and familiar user interaction for Sky users upgrading to a higher level service.
